FAQs

What if I want a different map to the ones you have here?

Drop us a line and we'll see what we can do.  We can do pretty fast turnround of bespoke maps in North Norfolk, slightly longer elsewhere.  Our maps seem to work best on low-lying land near water.  Take a look at our  bespoke page.

What is DIBOND®?

DIBOND® is a composite panel comprising aluminium outer faces either side of a plastic core.   It's light and strong and is an excellent substrate for printing, which is why we prefer it to any other medium for our maps.   Read more about it here.

Do you print on material other than DIBOND®?

The only material that works as well as DIBOND® in our experience is matt paper: if you wish to have your map printed on 190 gsm matt paper please contact us: there will be a small saving in material costs and delivery, although this is likely to be more than swallowed up in the costs of mounting and framing.

What's the largest size of DIBOND® you can print?

2400mm x 1200mm.

What resolution do you print at?

We print gallery grade at 300 dpi.  All the images on the website have been downgraded to 75 dpi (and will often be downgraded further by your browser).

Can we visit your workshop?

Sorry, our workshop is not set up to accept visitors.  But if you want to see what the finished product looks like we will usually be able to find a location where one or more maps are on show.  Please contact us.

Can we save money by collecting from your workshop in Norfolk?

To avoid unnecessary miles we have our printers (not Norfolk based) ship direct to customers, so there would be no saving in having your map delivered to us; moreover we're not set up to have visitors, so I'm afraid the most efficient way to receive your map involves professional delivery.

What's the hidden mounting system?

THe Dibond panels look best in our opinion if they stand proud of the wall with a shadow gap (and this is pretty much essential if your walls aren't flat).  The hidden mounting system helps you achieve this with the minimum of faff:  for best results you will hang your picture off one or two round-headed screws (ie, not countersunk).

Why do you not install any mounting system on portrait-orientated maps (ie, maps that are narrower than their height)?

We find that tall narrow maps tend to curl, and really need a full aluminium subframe to lie flat.   They can look amazing though!  Talk to us if you would like one and we can explain what is involved and possibly help  you find a hanger if you don't want to do the work yourself.

We have a large empty wall,  Could we install a tiled super-large map?

Yes!   You'd definitely want to involve some professional hangers, but a 6.6m x 2.2m map of the N Norfolk coast (6 tiles, each 1.1m x 2.2m at 1:5906 would look amazing! so would a 5.5m wide map of the whole of the Solent at 1:11811!

What's with the weird scales, 1:5906, or 1:11811?

Our raw data is on a 1m grid, but the printers print at 300 dpi.   If each printed pixel is to correspond to a single 1m x 1m grid element then you'd want one inch, ie, 25.4mm, to correspond to 300m, ie, 300,000mm.   The ratio 25.4:300,000: is the same as 1:11811.
